I've installed a virtual OpenSuse server. I want to install the latest stable version of MariaDB. What install version do I need and where can I find documentation for installing. I'm an absolute no-know on Linux...

MariaDB is available in openSUSE. See http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:MySQL.
In particular this page — http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Switching_between_MySQL_variants — suggests that to install MariaDB you need to do zypper in mariadb
