ODBC Connector and MS ACCESS 2010 not communicating

My experience is really with MS SQL server so it has been difficult to get my set up working. I have a synology DS215J running MairiaDB 10. Because it runs on synology there is no real access to any of the cfg settings. I am trying to use MS access (2010) on my Windows 8.1 machine as a front end for the database and I want to use ODBC to link the two.

The database is up and functioning on the synology and there is a simple first name last name table for proof on concept. I am using the latest 32b Maria ODBC connector (the 64b does not connect to the database). and the test DSN function works and you can read the tables etc. All the options on the connector are at their default values

When I am in MS access and I try to link the database I choose external data/ODBC database Select Link to the data-source by creating a linked table I then choose the previously created (& tested) ODBC source I am shown the tables but when I click OK I get the error message " Reserved error (-7731); there is no message for this error"

I am at a loss how to progress how to debug what is going wrong or to fix it and I wondered if anyone has come across this problem before and can offer a direction to go in?
