Nimbuzz uses MariaDB

With the assistance of SkySQL, Nimbuzz has migrated to MariaDB. They have over 150 million users worldwide. Via the press release:

LONDON and ROTTERDAM 19 MARCH 2013– SkySQL, the trusted provider of open source database solutions today announced Nimbuzz, the device agnostic communication app, as its latest customer. Nimbuzz’s unified communications products, including Instant Messaging and Video Calling, can be found on ten different platforms, including iPhone, Android and Windows Phone. SkySQL is providing consulting and support for Nimbuzz’s MariaDB databases – a technology choice which is part of a growing trend- away from proprietary database software.

With over 150 million users worldwide and gaining several users per second, Nimbuzz’s MySQL databases, which run on MariaDB, needed full-time support due to the amount of user data traffic. By having external support, Lars Hoogweg, Nimbuzz CTO and his team have more time to focus on other strategic projects. When looking for consultancy, Hoogweg needed a company who can give quick, in-depth answers on complex queries and provide expert knowledge on the databases.

Nimbuzz has been fully supportive of the open source movement since it launched in May 2008 and it wanted to work with a company that holds the same values. Lars added: “One of the reasons we chose SkySQL was due to its close ties with the open source community and with Monty himself, the father of MariaDB. There were other options available, but SkySQL stood out because of its expertise on the database which is unparalleled and it best embodied ‘the Spirit of MySQL’.”

On his experience of working with SkySQL so far, Hoogweg adds: “It has been great, the in-depth analysis we receive from SkySQL is fantastic. It saves us time guessing what the root cause of issues with our databases are. SkySQL is quick in offering solutions and they give us an on-site health check, which is part of their enterprise subscription package, every year.”

Patrik Sallner, SkySQL CEO said: “We are delighted to be providing support to Nimbuzz, a fellow European innovator who connects millions of people together. Lately, we have witnessed thousands migrate towards MariaDB from MySQL and SkySQL is committed to provide services to these MariaDB users new and established. Our unrivalled expertise on MariaDB as well as the MySQL database and our close relationship with Monty Program is a key differentiator in the MySQL ecosystem.”
