How does one cause the MariaDB to print a fixed string in a SQL command script, to, for example, indicate the progress of the execution of the script, e.g., "populating table X" ?

Judging by your other comment, you mean on the shell, as you tried the system command, which only works in Unix/Linux, and not Windows. You'd want to script this, not do it inside MariaDB.
