Any special considerations when upgrading from MariaDB 5.5.x to the 10.x versions?

I am looking to move our MariaDB 5.5.29 installation to the MariaDB 10.0 release on CentOS 6.3

Is it enough to just shutdown the database, replace my yum repo and run yum update and run mysql upgrade when it is done?

Treat it like you would any other upgrade. e.g. make backups of your data, configuration, and so on...

MariaDB 10.0 is still Alpha quality, and not all features planned for 10.0 final have been pushed yet, so you'll want to tread carefully and have a plan for reversing the upgrade, should things break horribly.

That said, I haven't had any trouble running MariaDB 10.0 on my test box. Even so, I don't have it running in production anywhere yet.

Good luck!
