Replication from MySQL 5.5.24 (master) to 10.2.11-MariaDB (Slave)

When starting the slave on mariadb 10.2.11 with the "start slave" command, we get the error "1595 Relay log write failure: could not queue event from master". The attempt to bypass the problem by using "set global binlog_checksum='NONE';" on the slave was not successful: same error. Is there a workaround for this problem, respectively would upgrading the master to mysql 5.6 be a solution?

You probably need to set binlog_checksum to NONE as suggested in the Upgrading to MariaDB 10.2 article.
